Original item posted at 4:25 p.m. April 29: On March 18 Dallas police found 68-year-old Gerald Canepa dead inside his home at 1430 S. Montreal Avenue in Oak Cliff. At the time, Dallas PD said it “appears to be a homicide,” but wouldn’t confirm a cause of death — though some media outlets reported that he’d been stabbed to death.
Monday afternoon, Dallas police released the arrest warrant affidavit that says it was indeed a homicide: According to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, Canepa was strangled and stabbed multiple times. Police have also named a suspect, 27-year-old Christopher Howard Beachum, who remains at large. He faces a capital murder charge.
According to police, the two met on Craigslist. The affidavit says they exchanged emails in which “Suspect Beachum indicated that he was going to Complainant Canepa’s residence to engage in sexual intercourse with Complainant Canepa.” The emails continued until the early morning hours of March 15, police say, which is when Canepa was likely killed.
Police say that when he was found on March 18, Canepa was lying on his bed nude, stabbed to death, strangled. The living-room television was gone; “wiring was laying out,” says the affidavit. The DVD rack next to the television had been emptied. A laptop computer was gone; so too a desktop computer. His cellphone was gone too.
The witness who found the body told police Canepa lived alone and used Craigslist as a dating service. A search of Canepa’s phone records and emails revealed he’d been corresponding with Beachum, who lives in Addison.
In the days after the murder, police say, detectives discovered Beachum had pawned Kodak and Canon cameras that belonged to Canepa. And he sold some DVDs to the Entertainmart near the Galleria on Alpha Road.
Based on those emails and cell-phone tower records, police say, they believe “Beachum is the last person to be with Canepa when he was alive.”
Much Love … Tisha
